The role and mission of the Lexington Public Library is to extend quality service to area residents.
LIBRARY CARDS The Lexington Public Library issues a library card without charge to any person living within the city limits. Library card applicants must show two forms of identification to demonstrate residency. Persons under 16 years of age need a parent's signature on the application card. The signature on the application card verifies the person's agreement with the library to return items on time and to follow the policies and rules of the library. Non-resident (not living within the city limits) cards are issued for $5.00 per year per family. New patrons will be limited to 5 items checked out at any given time for the first 6 months as a first time card holder. More items can be checked out when any or all of those 5 items are returned. Temporary cards may be issued to persons with short-term residency. Temporary cards cost $10.00 and are issued for a period of six months. When all items are returned and the borrower turns in the card, the $10.00 will be refunded.

OVERDUE ITEMS
- Items not returned on the due date are considered overdue. A daily fine of 10-cents per-day per-item will be assessed beginning with the first day. The maximum fine will not exceed the cost of the item. If items are not returned within 7 days, the borrower will be sent an overdue notice.
- One day after the items become overdue, a courtesy telephone call will be made as a reminder. If no telephone number, a postcard will be sent at no charge.
- After one week of unreturned items, a postcard will be sent with an additional charge of $2.00 added to the fine.
- If overdues are still not returned one week after the first notice is sent, a second notice will be sent with an additional charge of $5.00.
- If the items are not returned by the specified date in this notice, a reprocessing surcharge of $3.00 per item will be added and charged to your record. The purpose of this is to save staff time involved in removing and then adding the material back into the collection.
